How to explain a large deposit for a UK visitor visa
Identify the payer, original source, date, currency and whether the money is yours to use. A transfer between your own accounts, a bonus, a gift and a loan are different facts; describe the actual transaction. UKVI caseworker guidance discusses matching declared finances and supporting evidence. It does not give a universal large-deposit threshold.
Build a source-of-funds matching table
| Deposit to explain | Record to look for | Cross-check |
|---|---|---|
| Own-account transfer | Statements showing debit and credit | Both account holders, amount, dates and any exchange rate |
| Employment bonus | Employer bonus confirmation and payslip | Gross/net amount, payer and payment date |
| Family gift or support | Transfer record and truthful sponsor explanation | Relationship, support scope and who can use the money |
| Sale proceeds | Genuine sale agreement and payment record | Seller, asset, agreed amount and received payment |
Copy this transaction note
Deposit date: [date] Amount and currency: [amount] Payer and relationship: [details] Actual source: [facts] Receiving statement: [B01, page, transaction] Source record: [F01, page] Difference in dates/amounts: [supported explanation] Unresolved evidence: [what is missing]
Check the application and missing evidence
Separate recurring income from one-off receipts when comparing the application answers. If fees or currency conversion explain a difference, point to the relevant record. If a cash deposit has no traceable source, identify the gap honestly; a new explanation is not independent proof. Keep original statements unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed amount that counts as a large deposit?
These official guides do not set a universal threshold. Consider the transaction in the context of your usual income and the finances declared in your application.
Should I call a family transfer salary?
No. Describe its actual source and whether it is a gift, loan or travel support. Match the description to real records.
Can an explanation replace source evidence?
A note helps the reader locate and understand evidence. It does not replace missing transaction records or establish access to funds.
