China visa for former Chinese citizens and overseas Chinese: extra documents for the first application

If you were a Chinese citizen and became a citizen of another country, your first Chinese visa application after naturalisation needs extra documents. The Chinese Embassy in the US asks for your Chinese passport bio page and naturalisation certificate online, and your latest Chinese passport as an original when you submit.

This guide is based on the Chinese government, embassy and visa centre pages listed at the end, checked on 2026-10-14. Tables and worksheets are VisaPilot preparation methods, not an official checklist.

Who this applies to

This guide is for people who held Chinese nationality and later naturalised in another country, and for families applying for children or parents in that situation. Chinese family background alone does not make someone a former Chinese citizen; answer the form based on the nationality you actually held.

Extra documents for the first application after naturalisation

From the Chinese Embassy in the US:

DocumentUpload onlineOriginal at submission
Chinese passport bio pageYesLatest Chinese passport
Naturalisation certificateYesAs requested
Name change document (first application after a name change)YesAs requested
Old passport with a still-valid Chinese visa or residence permitIf you have oneYes

The embassy also lists a Chinese Passport Information Statement among its downloadable forms, and has separate guidance for minors of Chinese origin born in the US. If you cannot provide your old Chinese passport, contact the embassy before applying and ask which form or explanation it needs.

Visiting family: Q2 and Q1 visas

  • Q2: visiting relatives who are Chinese citizens or foreigners with Chinese permanent residence, staying up to 180 days. Needs an invitation letter and a copy of the inviter's Chinese ID (both sides) or passport and permanent residence card.
  • Q1: family reunion staying over 180 days. Also needs the original relationship certificate, such as a marriage or birth certificate.
  • Family members include spouses, parents, children, children's spouses, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren and parents-in-law.
  • In the UK, a 5- or 10-year Q2 visa needs all previous family visit visas and proof of immediate family relationship; minors need a birth certificate showing both parents and both parents' passport pages.

Can you use visa-free entry instead?

The 30-day visa-free policy and 240-hour transit are based on the ordinary passport you now hold. The published conditions checked for this guide do not set separate rules for former Chinese citizens. If your situation is unusual, such as an unresolved Chinese passport, ask the Chinese embassy or call the 12367 immigration service hotline (+86 12367) before you travel.

Common questions

I was born in China and am now a US citizen. What extra documents do I need?

For your first Chinese visa after naturalisation, upload your Chinese passport bio page and naturalisation certificate, and bring your latest Chinese passport as an original when you submit, according to the Chinese Embassy in the US.

I no longer have my old Chinese passport. What should I do?

Contact the embassy or consulate that covers where you live before applying. The US embassy lists a Chinese Passport Information Statement among its forms; ask which form or explanation applies to you.

Do I need these documents every time?

The US embassy describes them as requirements for the first Chinese visa application after naturalisation, and the name change document for the first application after a name change.

Which visa do I need to visit my parents in China?

Usually a Q2 visa for stays up to 180 days, with an invitation letter from your parent and a copy of their Chinese ID card.

Official sources and check dates

Official instructions take priority. Requirements differ between embassies, consulates and visa centres, so check the page for the place where you will apply.
