Mistake on DS-160, expiring passport or name mismatch: how to fix it

For a minor mistake after submitting the DS-160, submit a corrected DS-160 and bring both the original and the corrected confirmation pages to the interview. Whether a passport is still usable depends on your intended stay and whether the issuing country is on the six-month exception list.

This guide is based on the official pages listed at the end, checked on 2026-10-09. The tables and worksheets are VisaPilot preparation tools, not a government mandatory checklist.

A mistake found after submitting the DS-160

Minor corrections and changes are allowed, such as a renewed passport, new phone number, change of address, job change, minor change of travel plans or change of marital status.

  1. Submit a corrected DS-160 and obtain the new confirmation page.
  2. Bring both the original confirmation page used to schedule and the corrected page to the appointment.
  3. Check the DS-160 number stored in your appointment profile. If the page you bring does not match the profile, you will not be able to attend.

If an agent booked with a random or incorrect DS-160 number: cancel the appointment, update the profile with the correct number, then schedule again.

Never submit a blank or placeholder DS-160 to hold an appointment. It results in loss of the appointment.

A DS-160 that is about to expire

A DS-160 is valid for one year from submission. If it will expire before the appointment, complete a new one and carry both the old and new confirmation pages on the day.

Can I apply with a passport that expires soon

General rule: the passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay in the United States.

Exception: some countries have an arrangement under which their passports meet the requirement until the printed expiry date. The list in 9 FAM 403.9-3(B)(2) includes Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and the United Kingdom, among others. Mainland China is not listed; Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are.

Passport situationWhat it means
Issuing country on the exception listThe passport must cover the whole intended stay; admission is not granted beyond the expiry date
Issuing country not on the listThe passport must be valid six months beyond the intended stay
Validity does not cover the tripThe officer should urge you to extend or replace it first; the period of stay granted at entry may be limited
Damaged, peeling or laundered passportObtain a new passport before the interview

The Australian service is more cautious: obtain a new passport before the interview if yours expires less than six months after you enter the United States. The full list is in 9 FAM 403.9.

If the passport expires or is replaced after you book: the passport number and dates can be updated the same way, with a corrected DS-160 and both confirmation pages.

A valid visa in an expired passport

The expiry of a passport does not affect a valid visa inside it. If the visa is undamaged and unmarked and your purpose matches its class, travel with the old and new passports together.

The name and personal data must be the same in both passports, and both must be from the same country and of the same type. The consulate cannot transfer a visa to a new passport. A damaged visa means reapplying.

A name that differs from the passport

  • List every other name on the DS-160: a maiden name, a different name on the birth certificate, and names used on past official documents.
  • Name changed by marriage: you can travel with both passports and the marriage certificate.
  • Name legally changed by marriage, divorce or court order: obtain a new passport; the Department of State recommends then applying for a new visa to make travel easier.
  • Check the printed details as soon as you receive a visa. If they do not match the passport, contact the issuing consulate immediately.

Photo upload failed

The application items already include one 2 x 2 inch photo taken within the last six months. If the DS-160 upload does not succeed, it matters even more to bring a compliant printed photo to the interview.

For digital image dimensions and file size, follow the Department of State photo requirements.

Common questions

Can I change my DS-160 after submitting it?

Minor corrections are made by submitting a corrected DS-160. Bring both the original and the corrected confirmation pages to the interview.

My passport expires in four months. Can I apply for a US visa?

It depends on the issuing country and your intended stay. On the exception list, the passport only needs to cover the stay; otherwise it must be valid six months beyond it.

Can I use the US visa in my old passport after renewing?

Yes, if the visa is valid and undamaged. Carry both passports; they must be from the same country and of the same type, with matching personal data.

The DS-160 number in my appointment differs from my confirmation page. What now?

Update the appointment profile with the correct number. Applicants whose numbers do not match cannot attend the interview.
