How to apply for an extension
- Go to the public security exit-entry office for the place you are staying, at least 7 days before the Duration of Each Stay ends.
- Bring your passport, the form, a photo, your accommodation registration and the documents for your visa type (see the table).
- The office decides within the period on its receipt, usually up to 7 working days. The receipt lets you stay legally while your passport is held.
- Collect the decision in person. A refusal is final and cannot be appealed.
An inviting organisation or relative may apply for you if you are under 16 or over 60, ill, or the inviter pays your costs in China, or if you have a good stay record after a previous entry.
How long you can extend
| Visa | Maximum extension | Main supporting documents |
|---|---|---|
| L (tourism) | 30 days | Travel plan and itinerary; travel agency letter for group tours |
| M (business) | 180 days | Letter from the inviting company or individual |
| F (exchange) | 180 days | Letter from the inviting or receiving organisation |
| Q2 (family visit) | 180 days | Invitation letter, inviter's ID, proof of family relationship |
| S2 (family of foreigners in China) | 180 days for relatives, 90 for other private matters | Invitation, inviter's residence permit, relationship proof |
| X2 (short study) | 180 days | Study certificate from the school |
| G (transit), C (crew), J2 (journalist) | 30 days | Onward ticket or the relevant certificate |
The total of all extensions cannot exceed the original Duration of Each Stay on the visa. An extension only covers the current entry.
Changing the visa type
You can apply to change a visa in China when your purpose of stay changes, when you start using a new passport, or when you have to separate from a tour group. The national guide lists changes to F, J2, M, Q2, R, S2 and X2 visas, and caps the total stay on changed visas at one year from your current entry.
Changing a tourist (L) visa to a work (Z) visa is not one of the listed changes. A Z visa normally starts with the employer's work permit notification and an application outside China. The guide does allow a work permit holder who has no time to apply abroad to apply for a work-type residence permit in China, so ask your employer and the local exit-entry office whether that applies to you. Working without a work permit or work residence permit is illegal employment, with fines for both the worker and the employer.
After visa-free entry or under an exemption agreement
After a 30-day unilateral visa-free entry, a longer stay needs a stay permit from the exit-entry office. Under a mutual visa exemption agreement, an extension is only for emergencies or force majeure and must be requested before the visa-free period ends. See China entry requirements.
If you have already overstayed
Overstaying is illegal stay. The law provides a warning, and in serious cases a fine of RMB 500 a day up to RMB 10,000, or detention of 5 to 15 days. Go to the exit-entry office yourself rather than waiting until departure; the airport cannot extend a visa.

Common questions
How do I extend my China visa?
Apply at the public security exit-entry office where you are staying, at least 7 days before your stay ends, with your passport, accommodation registration and the documents for your visa type.
How long can I extend a China tourist visa?
Up to 30 days for an L visa, and the total extension can never exceed the original Duration of Each Stay.
Can I change my L visa to a Z visa in China?
L to Z is not one of the listed in-country visa changes. A Z visa normally starts with the employer's work permit notification; in some cases a work permit holder may apply for a work-type residence permit in China instead.
What happens if I overstay my China visa?
You can be given a warning, and in serious cases fined RMB 500 per day up to RMB 10,000 or detained for 5 to 15 days under the Exit and Entry Administration Law.
Can I stay in China while my extension is processed?
Yes. The exit-entry office issues a receipt, and you may stay legally on that receipt while your passport is held.
