Why Hong Kong and Macao use up an entry
Hong Kong and Macao are special administrative regions with their own border controls and their own visa rules. A Chinese visa for the mainland is checked when you enter the mainland, so every time you cross back from Hong Kong or Macao you use one entry. A visa becomes invalid once its entries are used up, even if the expiry date has not passed.
How many entries your route needs
| Route | Mainland entries | Visa to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Home → Shanghai → Beijing → home | 1 | Single entry |
| Home → Hong Kong → Shenzhen → home | 1 | Single entry for the mainland; check Hong Kong rules separately |
| Home → Beijing → Hong Kong → Guangzhou → home | 2 | Double entry |
| Home → Shanghai → Macao → Zhuhai → Hong Kong → Shenzhen → home | 3 | Multiple entry |
| Home → Hong Kong → Beijing → Hong Kong → home | 1 | Single entry for the mainland |
Count each arrival into the mainland, not each city. Write the Hong Kong or Macao legs into your itinerary and application, because the officer decides the number of entries from your stated plans. First-time applicants generally receive a single-entry visa; a double or multiple-entry request is easier to support with a copy of a Chinese visa held in the past five years.
If you already hold a single-entry visa
You cannot add entries to an issued visa. The Chinese consulate's answer for a Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou trip is to apply for a double-entry visa before you travel; with a single-entry visa you need a new visa from the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong while you are there. Check that office's current requirements and processing time before relying on it.
Visa-free travellers and 240-hour transit
If your nationality is on the 30-day visa-free list, each entry is treated separately, and the policy currently has no limit on the number of entries or total days, so a mainland, Hong Kong, mainland route does not need a visa. Each stay is up to 30 days, counted from the day after entry, and the policy for most countries ends on 31 December 2026.
The 240-hour transit policy requires travel onward to a third country or region with a confirmed ticket and entry through a designated port. If your route uses Hong Kong or Macao as the onward or arrival point, confirm that the exact route qualifies with the airline and the National Immigration Administration before booking.

Common questions
Does going to Hong Kong count as leaving China for my visa?
Yes. Leaving the mainland for Hong Kong or Macao and coming back uses another entry on a mainland Chinese visa.
Do I need a double entry China visa to visit Hong Kong in the middle of my trip?
Yes, if you enter the mainland, go to Hong Kong or Macao and then return to the mainland. For example, Beijing, then Hong Kong, then Guangzhou needs a double-entry visa.
Can I add an entry to my single-entry China visa?
No. Entries cannot be added to an issued visa. Apply for the right number before travelling, or apply for a new visa at the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong.
I can enter China visa-free. Can I go to Hong Kong and come back?
Yes, if your nationality is on the 30-day visa-free list. The policy currently has no limit on the number of entries; each stay is up to 30 days from the day after entry.
