Do Filipinos need a visa for China?
The Philippines is not on China's 30-day unilateral visa-free list or on the 57-country list for 240-hour visa-free transit, so a trip to mainland China needs a visa in advance. The one exception open to every nationality is 24-hour direct transit: with a confirmed onward ticket you may stay up to 24 hours in the airport restricted area without a visa.
Holders of diplomatic or official passports follow separate rules and apply through the embassy, not the visa centre.
How the Manila process works
- Complete the online application form on the Manila visa centre site, then print and sign it.
- Bring the signed form, photo, passport and supporting documents to the visa centre. Regular submission runs 09:00–15:00 and urgent submission 09:00–11:30.
- Collect your passport in person: regular collection 09:00–16:00, urgent collection 12:00–16:00. Check the visa details before you leave the counter.
The consular officer decides whether to issue the visa and its validity and length of stay, and may ask for an interview. Application documents are kept by the embassy, so bring copies of anything you need back.
Documents every applicant needs
- Original passport with at least six months of validity and at least two blank visa pages, plus a copy of the data page. Dual nationals bring every valid passport; also bring previous expired passports.
- Signed application form and one recent colour photo, 48 mm × 33 mm, white background, no head covering, taken within six months. Stapled, taped or clipped photos are not accepted.
- Copy of your most recent Chinese visa of the same type, if any.
- If you are not a Philippine citizen: original and copy of proof of legal stay, residence, work or study in the Philippines. Temporary visitors are expected to apply in their home country, with exceptions decided case by case.
- Former Chinese citizens: the last Chinese passport held, or previous passports and visa pages if you renewed your foreign passport.
First-time travellers to China
If you have never been to China, the Manila centre asks for extra proof:
| Requirement | Accepted documents |
|---|---|
| Funds | Bank certificate of deposit balance with the past six months of statements |
| Ties and income (one of) | BIR-stamped income tax return with a certificate of employment; business registration certificate; professional or student ID |
| Service level | Express and rush service are not available to first-time travellers |
Business travellers also need an invitation letter from the Chinese partner or a trade fair invitation, and the centre stresses that it must match the information on the application form.
Children and minors
For applicants under 18, add the birth certificate showing both parents' names, copies of the parents' passports and of any Chinese visas they hold, and a travel consent letter from each parent who is not travelling. See the China visa for children guide for the full checklist.
